The house

A jewellery house in Paris

Latournerie strikes and engraves medals and signet rings — and turns a few rings in small series. The medals, for a christening or bearing a saint, are struck on a screw press in 750/1000 gold or 925 silver, then finished by hand: the name, the date, a line on the back. The signet rings are turned and filed by hand, and engraved with your crest, your monogram or your initials — intaglio to seal, in relief for the hand.

Every piece is designed by the person who will give it: the diameter or the ring size, the metal, the motif, the engraving. The atelier strikes, hallmarks and ships from Paris, in a case, with the certificate that states the fineness of the metal. In fifty years the piece must still hold — that is the craft.

The house answers

Questions we are asked

Which metal for a christening medal?
750/1000 gold or 925 silver. The fineness is struck into the metal and stated on the certificate. Yellow gold remains the classic choice for a christening; silver engraves just as finely.
What is engraved on the back of a medal?
Usually the name and the date. The back is smooth, engraved by hand on one or two lines. Engraving the name is included.
How do you choose a saint medal?
By the child’s name, or by the saint you wish to entrust them to — St Christopher for the journey, the Virgin for a christening. Each medal is struck in Paris, with an engravable back.
On which finger is a signet ring worn?
On the little finger or the ring finger. The face is chosen to suit the hand: oval 14 × 12 mm for a broad hand, round 11 mm for a slender one. The house adjusts to the half size.
How long does it take to make?
Two weeks for an engraved medal, four for a signet ring; heraldic engraving takes eight days more. Every piece leaves Paris in its case, certificate included.
